How can Caption.Ed support your academic staff?

This article will explore how Caption.Ed can help academic staff save time and energy by generating captions.

Overview

For many academic staff at our universities, Caption.Ed is a lifeline for quickly generating captions for live or pre-recorded media. We've all heard stories of it taking 3 hours to update or create captions for a 1 hour lecture, but this doesn't need to be the case.

Caption.Ed will help lecturers create subject-specific captions with industry-leading accuracy instantly. We also provide a leading-edge editing suite to support human moderation when required and an AI-driven triaging system, to flag captions that need some human TLC.

Generating Captions

Once the member of staff has the software installed they can navigate to any media and begin to caption. Caption.Ed can be used in live learning environments, pre-recorded lectures, or even in face-face sessions.

All captions generated for university media are stored on the user's dashboard, which can be accessed via our website. The user will be able to see the video they have used Caption.Ed on and access the full transcript for that session.

Important Note: When captioning through the Browser extension, you don't have
to watch the full video, you will still get a complete transcript

The user can then click on any transcript, open it in our leading-edge transcript editor and make speedy edits. They can also download the transcript as a VTT file, TXT file, or a DOCX file if they wanted to pair the captions to the original media.

Triaging captions

When we generate and store captions we also provide a triaging system, this is to alert you to which captions might most need some human attention. Next to each stored caption is a confidence rating (this is not Word Error Rate). We generally suggest anything below 50% confidence needs some human attention.

Editing Captions

To edit captions we provide a state-of-the-art transcript editor. Our transcript editor will provide you the full time-stamped transcript, linked to the original media. You can click through the transcript and it will jump to the specific area of the media it refers to. You can change the speed of the playback and even use an array of keyboard shortcuts.

What's really impressive is that our Transcript Editor will highlight the areas of the transcript that need the most attention to save you time sifting through for errors.

All changes to transcripts are logged.

Collective Captioning

All edits made to a transcript are saved on the central Caption.Ed account for that institution which means that if a user goes back to a piece of media and uses Caption.Ed they'll be served up the most up-to-date edited captions.

Assigning tasks

Sometimes another user might flag a piece of media that needs human attention. This can be raised to an institutional administrator who can then flag the media to the member of academic staff to review.

These tasks will appear in the task list along with an email notification. Once a task is completed the transcript can be marked as edited and the task complete.

Similarly, sometimes editing might be done by someone other than academic staff and as such the task could be sent to another user to edit.
